When December rolls around Indiana can become grey, cold and snowy. For a state that is relatively flat, skiing might not be your first thought for a weekend trip, but down near the Hoosier National Forest is a ski resort town that might say otherwise. Here is your guide to a weekend in French Lick, Indiana.
Where to Stay
French Lick Resort & Casino
This resort is the main attraction to the town. It is the first thing you see driving in, and is enormous. This resort is enough to last an entire weekend, from the casino to the golf course to the spa, there is plenty for everyone.
The Ross Cottage
This AirBNB location is just up the hill from downtown French Lick. It can host up to six people, and the host was incredibly kind, providing baskets with granola bars, toothpaste and even postcards! It’s a great affordable option.
Where to Eat
This authentic German restaurant has great options like sausages, potatoes and schnitzel. The cafe is decorated for Christmas at this time of year and the atmosphere is lively and festive. While it takes a long time to get your food, it’s worth the wait!
Ohana Hawaiian Bar & Grill
This is a new restaurant to French Lick, and is the place to go for seafood. They have specials each day of the week on both the food and the drinks.
For dessert stop over at French Licks, an ice cream and coffee bar. All of the ice cream is homemade, and they have unique combinations like maple & bacon, or cookie monster. However, my favorite thing on the menu was the Ice Cream Frappe – a combination of ice cream and cold brew coffee. And the best part? You get to pick your ice cream. My recommendation is the caramel latte ice cream. Before you go, don’t forget to make your own s’mores as well!
What to Do
Ski at Paoli Peaks
In the next town over is a ski resort. Hills ranging from easy to difficult, and all of the equipment you need to rock the slopes. Or… attempt it and fall down quite a few times. Even if skiing and snowboarding isn’t for you, curl up by the fireplace with a good book and some hot chocolate and enjoy this winter getaway!
Wine Tasting at French Lick Winery
Dry, sweet, sparkling, fortified, they have it all. The vineyard has been around for almost 20 years now. Try your wines with lunch at the vintage cafe on location.
Hiking at Patoka Lake
This beautiful lake is serene, even in the winter. It’s the second largest reservoir in Indiana. Hike along trails around the lake, just dress in warm layers! You can also camp, visit the Patoka winery and rent boats to take out on the lake in warmer months.
