Why You Need to Visit Cincinnati This Weekend

For all of you space nerds, you have until February 17th to head to Cincinnati! The Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal is hosting a special exhibit called Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission. We are in its final week at the museum and I am so glad that I went to see it.

Here’s how you can turn this exhibit into a fun, winter day trip in Cincinnati.

First Stop of the Day: Coffee

There are so many unique coffee shops around Cincinnati! It’s hard to go wrong. I went to a cute shop that was across the street from my AirBNB called BlaCk Coffee Lounge. I tried their speciality latte, vanilla & caramel and it was delicious! I always say that the day doesn’t begin until the coffee is in.

Up Next: Destination Moon

The museum opens at 10 a.m. so pop over and get there early to beat the crowds. That’s basically my motto for everything! There are a few different ticket packages you can purchase:

If you want into the museum, where they also have a permanent Neil Armstrong exhibit, into the special exhibit and into the Omnimax theater to see the documentary, it’s $31.50 for non-members.

I opted for getting into the special exhibit and seeing the Omnimax film, which was $20. Another reason to arrive early is to make sure there are still tickets available for the theater! You can’t get back into the exhibit, so you need to make sure you see the entire thing before leaving to go to the film.

At the exhibit you will learn all about the Apollo mission, which was about sending the first humans to the moon. The exhibit has everything from comparing the timeline of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union to the actual Command Module which housed Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin & Scott Collins on their trip. It’s incredible looking at something that has actually been in space and returned to Earth!

Lunch Time: Skyline Chili

I spent about an hour in the museum and another hour waiting for and watching the Omnimax film. It’s the perfect morning stop on our day in Cincinnati. Now, I firmly believe no one can visit Cincinnati without stopping at Skyline. This famous chili has chains all over southern Ohio and its surrounding states. For those of you who don’t know, they serve their chili over spaghetti noodles with a mountain of shredded cheese! It’s the perfect combination! Pair it with a coney dog and you’re all set.

Afternoon: Explore Downtown

One of my favorite things to do when I travel is walk around and explore – even in winter! Cincinnati has a great downtown. You can pop into boutiques, cafes and breweries, explore street art, and even try their famous Graeter’s Ice Cream!

End the Evening at: Brewdog

I love a good brewery! Looking around, I stumbled across this awesome, industrial brewery called Brewdog. They have an amazing menu. Their Cubano sandwhich is the best I’ve ever had! They also have a unique assortment of draft beers. You can even come in during the week to attend “Beer School” and learn about the brewing process and taste different drafts.

You can eat, drink and socialize over pinball, Jenga and giant Connect Four! It’s the best way to end your day in Cincinnati.

Here’s a tip for lodging in Cincinnati. There are tons of affordable AirBNB’s! We stayed in one downtown for just $65 a night. It was within walking distance of Brewdog and tons of other restaurants. Ours was a historic home that had been converted into apartments. Our little one-bedroom was perfect!

After visiting Cincinnati this weekend, I know it’s a place I want to go back to. You’ll be seeing me soon!
